How do you relate to planning for the road ahead?
Planning is one of those words that induces yawns in the majority of people. It is a word associated with budgets, work, county councils, politicians.... How do you respond to the question 'What are your plans for...?'. Does an answer flow with clarity and purpose or do you winch and retreat from the question? What if one thought of planning as a 'super-tool' for clarity, empowerment and fulfillment? Planning as means of management of your time and energy so that you get the best out of life. Planning to allow you to 'own' your own time and energy. Planning to facilitate your intentions coming to fruition. Little steps make planning easy and maybe as we float into a New Year these steps maybe helpful for you. Step 1: Create Space Set an intention to include a few minutes of 'nothing' in your day. Set up a space, a time, a routine to allow this to happen each day. Make a deal with yourself to sit / stand / lie in your space for 10 breaths, greeting each one with your full awareness. Don't be dis-heartened when something gets in the way come back the next day and begin again! Do this for 10 days in a row and see how the habit forms and the 'nothing' creates space. The regularity of the practice comes from setting a time each day to practice. Step 2: Know what you value Write a list of the 5 most important things in your life. Step 3: Know how you spend your time and energy. Do you spend your time and energy on what you you value or is it dissipated on things that don't nourish you? List approximately how much of your time you spend at different activities. e.g. social media, netflix, with loved ones, talking, listening to music, dancing, singing, exercising, worrying, cooking, cleaning, eating, shopping, working.... Step 4: Identify the energy sinks and energy givers. What activities replenish and nourish you? Which drain you of energy? When you examine the time you give to activities is there balance between the nourishing ones and the draining ones? What would you prefer to give less energy to? Step 5: Balance your spreadsheet Ensure that you balance the spreadsheet of your nourishing valuable activities with those which are functional and draining. Set realistic, achievable and measurable goals to begin the process of ensuring that you are giving your time and energy to things you value. Write them down, Begin with little steps. Step 6: Regularly and kindly Review on how things are going. Take time at a comfortable part of your week to check how you are getting on. Reflect on your successes. Note intentions which were not met is there potential for learning from them? If things are succeeding great. Make sure you acknowledge your efforts and achievements. If things are not happening as you hoped, try and identify why...maybe the goal was not realistic when balanced with other commitments in your life. Be kind to yourself and dispassionately break the goals down into smaller steps and lovingly try again. For many years I ran music classes for toddlers and their caregivers. Every September our autumn term began with an 'on the farm' theme...the opening song about a rooster call always makes me smile so I have paraphrased it's content in the title .....if I wrote the whole song down I would be disowned by the resident teenager.....the eye rolls are palpable as I find myself humming the tune......Anyway Morning Sun has risen, it's time to rise and shine ...for it is morning time........move that fantastic body, feel your breath, know your mind, invest in yourself!!
